We are deeply concerned at the recent developments in Delhi, India. At least 20 innocent civilians have lost their lives after protest sit-ins against the racist anti-muslim citizenship law were attacked by supporters of the ruling BJP party. Over the course of the past 24 hours Muslims in the capital, their properties and places of worship have been attacked by far-right mobs in the worst religious violence in decades.
As Indian Prime minister Modi and US President Trump met in Delhi, across the city racist mobs where lynching and attacking peaceful protesters. The events of the past 24 hours come as no surprise to those who have been following the recent events in the country. Under the leadership of Prime minister Modi and his BJP party, racist rhetoric has been peddled by those in power, with Muslims bearing the brunt of the racism.
Speaking on behalf of MAB, Mustafa Al-Dabbagh said: “For too long Modi and his supporters have shown one face to the international world and another to its citizens. Racism and far-right rhetoric has become the norm in India, with lynch mobs targeting Muslims and minority communities. We call on the UK government to take a stand against such racism and crimes, and to hold Modi and the Indian government responsible for restoring calm and punishing those responsible.”
