MAB Condemns Attempted Coup in Turkey
The Muslim Association of Britain (MAB) condemns in the strongest terms the attempted coup in Turkey.
The military coup that was coordinated by minority elements in the Turkish Army was met with strong resistance from the Turkish people who took to the streets in their masses to face the soldiers and their machinery. MAB applauds the Turkish people for their bravery and commends them for their stance against the perpetrators of the coup against democracy.
This attempt to subvert the democratic will of the Turkish people will have disastrous consequences well beyond Turkey’s borders. It would undermine democracy falling into the narrative of the terrorists.
Whilst reports are emerging of the coup being foiled, MAB calls on the British Government to affirm its support for democracy and the democratically elected President and Government.
We call on the British government to renounce this uncivil act.
Dr Omer El-Hamdoon, MAB President said: “Turkey is an important ally in the war against terror and against ISIS, specifically. This coup would have resulted in instability in the region and further atrocities. We pray that order is restored, promptly. Our thoughts are with the families of those who have fallen in upholding peace and democracy.”
