On the 11th of July 2016, Mrs Theresa May became the Leader of the Conservative Party, after her only rival Andrea Leadsom withdrew from the contest.

Mrs May is due to assume the role of Prime Minister on Wednesday 13th of July, following the early resignation of the current Prime Minister: David Cameron.

The Muslim Association of Britain (MAB) congratulates Mrs May on winning the Tory Leadership contest, and on soon becoming the second woman Prime Minister for the UK.

Following the UK’s vote to exit the European Union, there has been a marked increase in hatred and racist behaviour. MAB hopes that the new Prime Minister can restore unity and direction in the country, to end xenophobic and racist behaviour.

Achieving unity and stability requires the involvement of all sections of society; and MAB hopes that Mrs May would abandon the policy of disengagement in favour of constructive engagement and inclusion of all community sectors and stakeholders.
