Dawah is an Arabic word that linguistically means to invite or to call. Contextually, it signifies the calling of humanity to the beauty of Islam. We know that God talk isn’t popular these days, and when it is, there’s often a lot of misinformation. That’s why, at MAB, we’re on a mission to normalise religious discourse and convey the comprehensive, moderate and unifying essence of Islam to all.

What we’re doing

  • we give dawah training

    Our dawah training offers attendees the opportunity to brush up on their knowledge and communication skills. Derived from the Quran and Sunnah and taking into consideration societal context, we teach the most effective ways to share the beauty of Islam.

  • We produce high quality publications

    We strive to deliver easily accessible, accurate and eloquent Islamic literature written in the English language. Our publications are bespokely developed, free of charge and are distributed via schools, community groups and mosques.

  • We deliver engaging interfaith workshops

    In co-operation with local mosques and community groups, we host interfaith workshops designed to foster healthy dialogue. Our sessions provide the perfect opportunity to learn about Islam and the practices of Muslims, as well as to create strong community bonds.

Understanding the Basics

  • What is islam?

    Islam is an Arabic word that means submission, surrender and peace. Contextually, it is one of the three Abrahamic religions that proclaims complete monotheism.

    There are five key practices that all Muslims are obligated to fulfil throughout their lifetime. These practices are referred to as pillars because they form the foundation of Muslim life. The five pillars of Islam are Shahada, Salah, Zakat, Sawm, and Hajj.

  • Who is Allah?

    Allah is the Arabic word for God. The word has no gender or plural form, encapsulating an absolute oneness which is exemplified in the Islamic faith.

    Say, "He is God, [who is] One. God, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born. Nor is there to Him any equivalent. [Quran 112:1-4]

    Muslims believe that we begin to know God through His 99 names and attributes. He is the Creator, the Sustainer, the Compassionate, the Just and the Loving. There are no intermediates between humans and God, so our greatest asset is our ability to supplicate to Him.

  • Who is Muhammad?

    Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the son of Abdullah, born in Mecca. He was a humble man of noble character who was chosen as the final prophet and messenger of God, after a long line of other prophets and messengers, including Moses and Jesus.

    In 570CE, Muhammad (pbuh) began to receive revelation of the Quran and thereafter set out on his mission to convey the beauty of Islam to the world.

  • What is the Shahada?

    The Shahada (shahadah) is the Arabic term for the declaration of faith in one God (Allah) and His messenger.

    “There is no God but God (Allah – i.e. there is none worthy of worship but Allah), and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

  • What is Salah (Prayer)?

    Salah is the Arabic term for the prayer that is obligatory for Muslims to perform five times a day. It is the second pillar of Islam.

    The five obligatory prayers are:

    1. Fajr - between dawn and sunrise

    2. Dhur - midday, after the sun passes its highest

    3. Asr - the late part of the afternoon

    4. Maghreb - dusk, just after sunset

    5. Isha - between sunset and the middle of the night

  • What is Zakat (Almsgiving)?

    Zakat is the Arabic word for almsgiving and is the third pillar of Islam.

    Every sane, adult Muslim who owns wealth over a certain amount must pay 2.5% of that wealth as to those in need.

    “…and those in whose wealth there is a recognised right, for the needy and deprived” (Qur’an 70:24-5)

  • What is Sawm (Fasting)?

    Sawm is the Arabic term for fasting and is the fourth pillar of Islam.

    Muslims are required to fast during the month of Ramadan from food, drink, sexual relations and displeasing speech and behaviour from sunrise until sunset. Children, travellers and those who are sick are not required to fast.

    The main purpose of fasting is to increase in God consciousness.

  • What is Hajj?

    Hajj is the sacred pilgrimage performed by Muslims to the holy mosque of Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. It the fifth pillar of Islam, and is obligated for everyone at least once in their lives (if they have the means).

    Hajj takes place during the month of Dhul Hijjah, the twelfth month in the Islamic Calendar and lasts 6 days.
